Bespoke Handmade Shoes for Women

True bespoke shoemaking begins with the foot.

Caroline takes detailed measurements and creates a personal last for the client, allowing the shape, balance and fit of the shoe to be developed with precision. This gives each commission its own architecture. The line of the heel, the curve of the toe, the height, the support and the way the shoe holds the foot are all considered together.

Fittings allow the design to be refined before the finished pair is made, ensuring that the final shoes are as comfortable and wearable as they are beautiful.

Materials and Handwork

Every element is chosen for quality, character and longevity.

Fine upper leathers, specialist sole leather, silk linings, couture embroidery, hand stitching, gilding, appliqué and rare decorative techniques may all be brought into a commission where appropriate. Caroline’s work is known for its richness of detail, but nothing is added without purpose.

Her footwear is hand-welted and constructed with the care of a fine object. The making process is closer to the building of a musical instrument or a piece of furniture than to conventional manufacture. Each stage contributes to the soul, structure and permanence of the finished shoe.

Made Slowly, Made Personally

Caroline accepts a limited number of bespoke commissions, allowing each pair the time, care and concentration it deserves.

This is slow craft at its highest level. A pair may involve many hours of handwork, specialist materials and several stages of fitting and refinement. The value lies not only in the finished shoes, but in the experience of having something made entirely for you, by one of the few makers working at this level.

Private Appointments

Bespoke commissions are available by private appointment.

Clients are welcomed by arrangement, and Caroline also travels to the USA to meet private clients. For those beginning their first commission, the process is guided personally by Caroline from the initial conversation through to the finished pair.

Prices are available on application and reflect the complexity of the design, materials and handwork involved.

“As one of the last remaining artisans in her field, drawing upon her family’s generational experience as master craftsmen, visiting her in her studio was a door into another world – where bespoke ideas are cut, stitched and carved into being by hand….the boots she made for me should probably be in a museum…”
